I’ve been on most of the on-line booking sites (Opodo; E-Booker’s; Travelbag etc.) and for my trip they all come up with Singapore Airlines as the best/cheapest option. My question is:- should I book through one of the sites or would it be safer to book direct with the airline on their own site?

Its safer to book directly with the airline.
To be safe I would book through a travel agents. That way, if the airline goes under you are covered and will get your money back. If you book online or direct with the airline, you have no cover.
If you book with the airline direct make sure you use a credit card as you have a greater amount of protection on urchases over £100. Also try STA travel who can get decent deals on tround the world tickets especially if you are under 26.
Check out this:
SIA will fly to Malaysia, but stop first in Changi, whereas MAS will fly direct to KL from London. There are some good deal to Oz via KL. Try phoning up, but do not book with Alex. Get someone else.
